After my stress test was normal, Dr. Krikorian explained that the test was around 70% accurate and that I should pay close attention to my body for any warning signs. A few weeks later I was exercising when my energy was zapped in less than 10 minutes and I had a pain under the sternum. I called Dr. Krikorian and he scheduled a cardiac catheterization the next day. He said I showed no sign of a heart attack but he found a 99% blockage in the circumflex artery, which he opened with a stent. I am grateful that he explained possible warning signs and then responded quickly with the catheterization and stent.

What Is a Chronic, Non-healing Wound?

A chronic wound is a wound that fails to progress through the normal stages of wound healing. It is as if these wounds have “forgotten” how to heal. The wound may be present for only a month, or may have been present for several years. Regardless of the type of wound, chronic wounds typically do not improve with routine treatment.

Why Do Chronic Wounds Fail to Heal?

While much research is being done to answer this question, we know that there are some common reasons why chronic wounds fail to heal. One of the most important is lack of adequate blood flow to the wound. Infection within the wound and poor general nutrition are other important factors. Underlying illnesses, such as cancer or diabetes, can cause a general impairment in the body’s ability to heal wounds. Other reasons include a history of prior radiation exposure and unrelieved pressure on the wounded area.

When should you seek treatment for your wound at Our Wound Healing Center?

  • You have had a sore that won’t heal for more than 30 days (commonly experienced by people with diabetes).
  • You have a sore with increasing pain, redness or swelling, foul odor or a change in color.
  • You have a surgical wound that has become infected.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

  • A list of any medications you’re currently taking, including vitamins and supplements
  • A written list of allergies you may have
  • Medical records including x-ray films if you have them

Much of the success of your treatment depends on you. We’ll count on you to follow directions carefully and watch your progress closely. You will learn about caring for your wound at home including how to change dressings and how to protect yourself from further injuries.
